Apple Reportedly Cancels 64-Core "Extreme" M4 Chip

Apple launched its new M4 chips in October, but the new generation does not include high-performance SKUs. According to recent reports, this is likely to remain the case, as Apple is said to have canceled plans for a supposed "Extreme" chip designed for AI servers with up to 64 cores.

According to The Information, the plans were scrapped, but the site’s sources did not reveal what led to the project's cancellation. Alongside its 64 cores, the M4 Extreme was expected to feature 160 GPU cores, positioning it as Apple’s fastest processor to date.

Based on its specifications, the Apple M4 Extreme would have been made by combining four M4 Max chips—each featuring a 16-core CPU and 40 GPU cores—into a package that totaled 64 processing cores and 160 GPU cores.

The M4 Max, notably, already offers significant memory bandwidth exceeding 500 GB/s, a figure surpassed only by the Ultra SKUs. This leads analysts to believe that the M4 Extreme would have easily broken that barrier, particularly if it were indeed aimed at AI workloads, where memory bandwidth is critical.

Apple M4 Ultra Expected in 2025

The Apple M2 series was also rumored to have had an Extreme version in development, but Cupertino reportedly abandoned those plans as well.

As for the M4 Ultra, it is currently in development and is expected to launch in the second half of 2025, according to rumors. The canceled Extreme chip was reportedly intended to power heavy-duty Mac Pro systems. With the Ultra chip’s production underway, it seems there will be a shift in focus, though it’s too early to confirm this with certainty.
