Acidul fumaric,izomerul trans cu formula plana HOOCCH=CH-COOH,se gaseste in multe plante:ciuperci,licheni etc. si apare in cantitati mici in toate organismele animalelor,unde are un rol important in metabolismul glucidelor.Izomeriul cis,numit si acid maleic,nu apare in natura.
